Bilal Mateen, is the inaugural Chief AI Officer at PATH, where he leads the organisation’s AI strategy and oversees programs developing innovative AI solutions to tackle major healthcare challenges, including strengthening regulatory systems for emerging technologies. Previously, he was Executive Director of Digital Square, supporting ministries of health across Africa and Asia in implementing technology to close the global health equity gap, and served as principal investigator on over $250 million in digital health grants. A trained physician with expertise in data science and machine learning, Bilal was formerly Clinical Technology Lead at the Wellcome Trust, where his team funded digital public goods addressing mental health, climate-related health impacts, and infectious diseases. He holds an honorary associate professorship at University College London (UCL), was a fellow of the Alan Turing Institute, and earned undergraduate degree from UCL, Masters in Public Health at the University of Edinburgh, and his PhD at King’s College London.
